Nokia 1100 became the world’s top selling consumer electronics product. It was sold 200 million units just within 5 years. Apple iPod was sold just about 100 million while Sony Play Station 2 was sold around 115 million. Previous top selling Nokia model is 3310/3330 which was sold 126 million units. Stunning sales of Nokia 1100 is mainly due to its sterling success in India and China. It was tailor made for mass population with features like torch light. In emerging markets, once a Nokia user is always a Nokia user. The 1100 and its followers -- 1101, 1108, 1110, 1110i, 1112 -- have crept to the top of sales charts around the world without attracting much media attention. 1 billion mobile phones shipped in 2006
According to International Data Group (IDC), more than 1 billion mobiles were shipped in 2006. This is 22.5% increase in growth over 2005. 0.83 billion mobiles were shipped in 2005. This performance is mainly attributed to rapid growth in China and India. India and China were added 74 million and 67 million new mobile subscribers respectively.
